Q. “Why doesn’t my power tool keep its speed up on my generator and often heats up to the point of being hot to the touch?

A . Generators make a quasi sine wave when they make electricity. This is only half of the wave that real electricity makes for your home or business. Real electricity is a full sine or “pure sine”. Back in the day (30s-80s), the brush type universal motors used in small portable power tools were made to run on D.C. or A.C. current. They had no reverse or variable speed. D.C. generators were welders and the other generators were A.C. current only, but with quasi sine.

Today, almost all portable corded power tools have computer chips in their switches. Whether it is variable speed, electronic feedback, slow start, electric brake or whatever is next. These electronic devices are very sensitive to the spicks that generators produce.

If you have to use a generator and you have a variable-speed drill you can bypass the switch, simply pull the trigger and then plug in your variable-speed drill. Most saws and grinders are just on off switches with no bells and whistles and they will work OK on GENS. You will have to look at the tools label first. But keep in mind that most generators do not regulate their power so the voltage can be as low as 80 volts and as high as 150 volts. Not to mention, highs and lows of their cycles per minute. I won’t bore you with all the other bad things that generators can do.

In short, the tools of today need real electricity that come from your wall or expensive electronic generators that produce pure sine electricity and have voltage regulation. Therese have built-in inverters that change that quasi since to pure sine and governor regulators that keep their speed maintained at 120 volt/60 cycles mark. Honda has a small one 3,000 watt and Kpor has a range from 1,000 to 6,000 in pure sine. Milwaukee will be next, I’m betting.

The good things that old generators can do are powering lights, induction motorss like the one in your refrigerator, freezer, well, furnace but not you plasma T.V., o.k., . . . . play scrabble!

The Ultra-Lok RSQ offers dual-mode operation that provides fall arrest and rescue/descent in one product for superior fall protection.

The world’s first dual-mode operation SRL, the Ultra-Lok RSQ SRL with Rescue allows the worker to select either the traditional “fall arrest” mode or a “rescue/descent” mode. If a fall event occurs while in the rescue/descent mode, the Ultra-Lok RSQ will arrest the fall and then automatically lower the worker safely to the ground or next level. This two-in-one operation allows the device to be optimized for the jobsite while providing the ultimate level of worker safety.

“DBI-SALA self retracting lifelines are the most technologically advanced fall protection devices available,” states Charley Bryant, product marketing manager for hard goods with Capital Safety. “The DBI-SALA Ultra-Lok RSQ Self Retracting Lifeline offers a revolutionary design to allow the worker multiple options within one device, while offering the highest level of security and mobility.”

Prior to starting work, the user sets the Ultra-Lok RSQ SRL to fall arrest or rescue/descent mode. If a fall were to occur while the device is in the fall arrest mode, a speed-sensing brake automatically stops the fall, reducing the forces exerted on the user to safe levels of 900 lbs or less. The fall arrest mode also allows for assisted rescue to take place. To conduct an assisted rescue, a co-worker would manually switch the selector to the rescue/descent mode, which lowers the fallen worker at a controlled speed to the ground or next level. If the SRL is out of immediate reach but within 16 feet, the co-worker can use a First-Man-Up™ Pole and Assisted Rescue Tool to move the selector to the rescue/descent mode. The fall arrest mode is ideal for situations in which the user is working over dangerous objects, such as moving machinery or traffic, or when the next level below the work area is more than 50 feet away.

If a fall occurs while the device is in rescue/descent mode, the speed-sensing brake stops the free fall and a centrifugal brake instantly lowers the user at a controlled speed to the ground or next level. The rescue/descent mode is ideal for situations in which the user is working alone or remotely, or where a rescue would be difficult, or if the next level below the worksite is within 50 feet.

The Ultra-Lok RSQ SRL incorporates a 50-foot lifeline, providing the worker exceptional mobility. The compact, lightweight design of the Ultra-Lok RSQ SRL, coupled with the built-in carrying handle makes it easy to carry, store and relocate the device. The anti-ratcheting brake system prevents the device from releasing in a post-fall rebound while connected to a flexible mount such as a horizontal lifeline. It also prevents “nuisance locking,” in which the device activates during normal movement.

The DBI-SALA Ultra-Lok RSQ SRL supports a capacity of 310 lbs, and meets all applicable industry standards, including OSHA and ANSI Z359.1 and A10.32.

Precision is the name of the game when it comes to medium to large hole-cutting in porcelain, granite, marble, ceramic tile or even glass. Slip-ups mean wasted money due to scratched or broken material or, worse, a hole that isn’t where the user wanted it. Thanks to Bosch’s innovative AutoStart™ system, users no longer have to worry about their hole saws skittering away during startup. The AutoStart design delivers sure and precise cuts every time.

Bosch’s AutoStart is an industry first mechanism that allows users to quickly and accurately drill a hole without first drilling a small pilot hole. With AutoStart, the pilot hole mechanism and the desired diamond hole saw cup are both already in place and ready to go, enabling – for the first time ever - one-step hole cutting in hard surfaces.

The heart of the system is a spring-loaded retractable shaft and a conical carbide tip that creates a tiny indent to ensure the hole saw doesn’t skate or walk, resulting in cleaner holes and less waste. The durable carbide-tipped AutoStart mechanism can easily center more than 1,000 holes - or 15 times more holes than a typical diamond hole starter.

The AutoStart system is available exclusively with Bosch’s new Quick Change Diamond Hole Saws. Available in sizes ranging from 3/16” to 4-1/8”, Bosch’s new lineup represents the best and most complete range of products for hole-cutting extremely hard tile materials.

Bosch’s vacuum brazing process increases diamond cutting edge life and delivers faster cuts. In addition, the tip is segmented allowing water to reach the cutting edge and keep the contact surface free of debris and reverse threaded reduce heat build-up. Further, the overhanging edge of vacuum brazed diamonds gives users more control during start up, ensuring more accurate cuts. A deliberate startup and sure cut minimize the pressure needed to execute a cut, greatly reducing the chance of accidental material breaks.
The complete product line consists of the “mini” and the “pro style” hole saws. The mini hole saws are 3/16” to 5/8” and are equipped with a quick change shank for use with Bosch’s Quick Change mandrel or other clic-change systems.

Bosch Diamond hole saws will be available in electrical, plumbing, HVAC and industrial distributors nationwide. Visit www.boschtools.com to find a Bosch Accessories dealer in your area.

Beta users have already created quite the buzz with framers and finish carpenters by running ahead of schedule AND producing better quality work!

“It’s the ultimate chop saw accessory”, says Brandon Vaughn of Cutting Edge Interiors. “SawGear is tough as nails! We slapped 2×6’s on the stop and SawGear took it and came back for more! I won’t do another job without it.” SawGear is a tough, portable tool that attaches to your miter saw right at your job site. Just enter your dimension, slap your material against the rugged stop and cut your part, no fiddling around, no fitting, and no re-cutting again. It’s right every time. In the building industry, margins are getting thinner and competition is getting more aggressive. This tool helps framers and finish carpenters spend up to 25% more of their time in the productivity zone rather than correcting inaccuracies both in cut pieces and overall assemblies. Jobs are completing ahead of schedule with SawGear AND the quality workmanship has become the norm giving the contractor the competitive edge.

If you’re building custom homes or high end interiors, then you just aren’t going to compete in the future without SawGear. It’s a game changer!” says Brandon Vaughn of Cutting Edge Interiors. “After using it only a few weeks, the SawGear has already paid for itself.“

The company’s patented LITHIUM-ION technology represents the new generation of cordless hand held power tools powered by battery packs capable of producing an average discharge current greater than or equal to approximately 20 amps. This patent protects the Milwaukee® brand’s newly introduced M12™ and M18™ LITHIUM-ION product lines as well as the industry’s first V28™ and V18™ LITHIUM-ION product lines. More efficient and environmentally friendly, the Milwaukee® LITHIUM-ION technology is the result of many years of development by the company’s engineers around the globe, representing a multi-million dollar investment by Milwaukee.

“This patent, along with other patents already issued to Milwaukee in the LITHIUM-ION field provide broad, valuable rights to Milwaukee in the use of LITHIUM-ION batteries in power tools”, says Steven Richman, President of Milwaukee Electric Tool Corporation. “The granting of this milestone patent confirms the long-stated position of Milwaukee® as having revolutionized the power tool industry as the leader in LITHIUM-ION technology for power tools.”

At the outset of the company’s ground-breaking work in LITHIUM-ION technology, Milwaukee filed numerous U.S. and international patent applications on many of its inventions in this field. This new patent follows upon a series of patents awarded to the company in LITHIUM-ION technology since 2005, when the company went first to market with its V28™ LITHIUM-ION power tools.

Additional patents directed to various aspects of its LITHIUM-ION technology including a power tool battery pack having battery cells with a combined nominal voltage of approximately 28-volts, prevention of brown-outs, a multi-chemistry battery charger and a multi-voltage LITHIUM-ION battery charger, have been granted by The U.S. Patent Office, as well as Patent Offices of other countries. A number of other patent applications are in the pipeline.

“We are proud of our leading role in LITHIUM-ION technology, bringing our commitment to intellectual innovation, vision, expertise and quality to pioneer the future of the power tool industry,” says Joseph Galli, CEO of TTi. “These patents and patent applications are valuable assets to TTi, and further demonstrate our continued commitment to innovative excellence,” says Horst J. Pudwill, Chairman of TTi.

Once again, Makita has raised the bar in the professional cordless tool market. They have just launched the release of its new 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless 3/8” Crown Stapler Kit, model BST221. The new cordless crown stapler adds to Makita’s extensive LXT Series of cordless tools featuring 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Battery Technology, a breakthrough in cordless technology that delivers more power, less weight and better engineering. The new BST221 is compact and powerful, and can drive a wide range of 3/8” crown staple lengths.

“The new BST221 is a true utility stapler and is ideal for a range of trades,” said Ethan Haughawout, associate product manager – cordless products. “It can drive 3/8” crown staples from 1/4” up to a class-leading 7/8” in length. But the true test for a cordless stapler is power, and this stapler delivers: it can drive staples flush into hardwoods like oak, maple and cherry. And like the other 34 tools in Makita’s LXT Series, this stapler has more power and less weight for wherever the job takes you.”
The BST221 will drive 1/4”, 3/8”, 1/2”, 9/16”, 5/8”, 3/4”, and 7/8” length staples (3/8” crown); and will also utilize Arrow® T50 type staples for maximum versatility. The easy-to-use depth control setting can be adjusted with a single knob. The rugged machined aluminum magazine ensuressmooth loading and feeding of staples, with a convenient window on the magazine that showsthe number of remaining staples.

The spring-loaded driving mechanism allows for a more compact tool with less weight: it weighs only 5.1 pounds at just 9-7/8” in length. The ergonomic shape fits like a glove with even pressure and easy control, and the soft grip handle provides increased comfort on the job. Applications for the BST221 include drywall, roofing, furniture, upholstery, and utility installation. It can even be used in a production environment for exterior framers to apply house wrap. This crown stapler can be utilized in many different areas such as residential construction, remodeling, woodworking, cabinetry, and more. It’s ideal for any pro contractor who requires a best-in-class engineered cordless 3/8” crown stapler.

The BST221 is powered by Makita’s 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Battery Technology and Rapid Optimum Charging System, a breakthrough in cordless technology producing 430% total lifetime work with two-and-a-half times more battery cycles when compared to traditional 18V Ni-Cd batteries. The Rapid Optimum Charger is ENERGY STAR rated for its charging efficiency, and will charge a Makita LXT Lithium-Ion battery in just 30 minutes. Model BST221 is a kit that includes two 18V LXT Lithium-ion batteries, 30 minute Rapid Optimum Charger, tool belt clip, contractor bag, and safety glasses. The BST221Z includes the tool only.

Since its introduction on October 3, 2005, Makita’s LXT Series featuring 18V Lithium-Ion Battery Technology has been providing the professional end-user with more work solutions. Three years later, with over 30 single tool solutions in the LXT Series, Makita’s 18V Lithium-Ion battery is a breakthrough in cordless with more power, less weight and better engineering, and Makita is proud to be the first to bring it to jobsites across America. “Makita did not just design a longer run time battery; we designed a complete tool solution to redefine the way pro users work,” said Ken Hefley, senior vice president marketing, Makita USA. “The LXT solution is all muscle and no fat, with 18 volt power at 12 volt weight. LXT allows the pro user to work longer with a better engineered tool solution.” Makita’s new LXT Series has been designed specifically for Lithium-Ion battery technology with less weight in a more compact size. LXT is 40% less weight and more compact. The ergonomic shape fits like a glove with even pressure while adding more control. The LXT Series is also equipped with built-in L.E.D. lights that operate independently from the tool to illuminate the work area. Makita LXT Lithium-Ion Batteries and Optimum Charging System produce 430% total lifetime work with two-and-a-half times more battery cycles when compared to traditional 18V Ni-Cd
batteries.

The Optimum Charging System is ENERGY STAR rated for its efficient charging process. Makita’s LXT Lithium-Ion batteries provide the pro user with many benefits, including 2,000 battery life cycles, longer run time, 40% less weight, five-times lower self-discharge to keep cells active and ready to use any time, a built-in memory chip to communicate with the Optimum Charger for more work, built-in shock absorbing features to protect the battery, and sixteen firm-holding contact terminals for constant high power. The battery works in conjunction with the Optimum Charger during the charging process for a more efficient charge and maximum battery life. The new Rapid Optimum Charger communicates with the LXT battery throughout the charge cycle using the built-in memory chip in the battery and the built-in CPU chip in the charger to recognize the history and battery condition to select the optimal charging method. The optimal charging method uses Active 3 Controls for current control, thermal control and voltage control. The charger has a built-in fan to cool the battery to produce more lifetime work.

It has better technology with a new smart Battery Diagnostic System (sold separately) that enables users to understand the battery condition to maximize battery life. This new system is ideal for large pro and industrial users with many batteries. This system is able to indicate how the battery was used and can optimally refresh each cell for more lifetime work, determine the battery life expectancy based on how many times the battery has been charged or gone through a cycle and can log each battery to keep a permanent record. Makita has also added 18V Compact Lithium-Ion cordless power tools to its line of Lithium-Ion products, and they are unique in both appearance and performance: The 18V Compact Lithium-Ion battery weighs just .85 lbs. and reaches a full charge in only 15 minutes, four times faster than the competition. The compact battery combined with the compact design of the tools delivers a superior power-to-weight ratio. These compact tools – including the ½” Compact Driver Drill (BDF452HW) – feature a new black and white exterior design, distinguishing these compact cordless models from Makita’s familiar teal-colored top-of-the-line cordless product in the LXT Series.

Makita’s newest compact products are powered by a 10.8V Lithium-Ion battery. These lower voltage products clearly have a place in Makita’s series of Lithium-Ion cordless tools. The new 10.8V products fill a need for Lithium-Ion battery power in an ultra-compact size. They are positioned as a first step into the Lithium-Ion battery platform from older battery technologies.

Makita LXT Lithium-Ion is backed by Makita’s new Three-Year Warranty which covers repair due to defective materials or workmanship up to three years from the purchase date.
